Dear Friends,

I write this to you because i am at my wits end as to the correct way to proceed. While i have a degree in engineering, i had moved into non technical roles in HR. However i deeply regret not pursuing a technical career and at age 37 wish to make the transition.I have always loved writing and hence my consideration of this field. However my doubt now is whether any organization will consider me at all for a technical writers position. While there are several technical writing training institutes, should I join one in the hope that this way at least i will land a job. Can some good souls please guide me if i should consider this path at all. Please help!!!!! Rgds, Darshan

Career in Technical Writing

Hello Darshan,

There is nothing that can prevent you from starting a career in Technical Writing. Age may seem to be a constraint but if you exhibit the attitude of a beginner and are willing to learn, you will be accepted in any set up. Moreover, you are in Bangalore - the hub of Technical Writing in India - and also an engineer. So do not be discouraged.

I started a career in this field at the age of 34. I did the Post Graduate Diploma in Technical Writing course (PGDTW) from Symbiosis University in Pune. However, I was selected because I can write well. While a Technical Writing course will help, it is not imperative.

I suggest that you go through the Technical Course in wikiversity at the following link:

http://en.wikiversity.org/wiki/Technical_writing

Knowing the basics of technical writing will help you during interviews. As you do this course, you may start applying for jobs in this field. If you do not get any call, you may consider doing a formal course.

However, please remember that you will be considered as a fresher / beginner in this field and will be paid accordingly.

Regards,
vnvwriter.

As far as I believe that TWB has a good reputation regarding teaching and also job assistance.

Any inputs please?
